I realized that my original article/rant was sort of poorly worded, but I was trying to say that buying a used German luxury car isn’t always instant death for your wallet. It definitely could happen, but it’s not a black or white thing that will happen as the aforementioned FP warriors make it out to be.
Original text : I love when un informed FP warriors shit on literally any used Mercedes article. They can be totally financially manageable if you do your research and buy a good example.

From personal experience, my ML has been extremely reliable from day one. Never has it left our family stranded, and it has always stayed strong through 14 years. Of course, we bought it new, and it has been babied, plus we have full documentation for it. And though it is reliable, it is a bit on the expensive side to maintain, but not as bad as people say.

I think that's the key to MB ownership, staying on top of it. If multiple systems need attention you're gonna have a bad time.

Can they be? Yes, if you are lucky enough, and especially if you can do your own wrenching. But if you are not lucky, and of something big breaks (coil packs at $1200 each, ABC rebuild at $2500 etc), you might be hurting.

Friend has his parents’ 2001 ML430 with almost 200k miles. Runs like a charm. He pays for whatever it needs now and he said he got most of the big work done... eg, shocks, struts etc.

Yep. He bought a car that was in iffy condition. I have the same model of car and it has been mostly trouble free

Yeah but “It hasn’t happened to me yet!” isn’t strong evidence when you’re talking about risk of catastrophic failure.
We had a Land Rover for 120,000 miles that never had a major problem. It had one turn signal go out, one parking sensor pop loose, and a battery went bad. That’s it. Other people have had them seriously break down five times in the same year.

I’ve had ABC trouble with mine too, but I’m saying it isn’t the end zone of the world if you buy a used S class

Definitely can be. I have a lot of customers who make a totally average amount of money and handle their maintenance and repairs just fine. I own two on a one income (mechanic’s income) household, yes I do my own work but parts can still be expensive. And you know what? They’re surprisingly ready to work on if you’re not expecting it to be a Honda. The hard part is diagnosis due to the complexity, the average maintenance and must basic repairs are simple, although potentially time consuming compared to that Honda.

This is a cop out. This is true of any car. But Mercedes are worse at it.
And think about this: even a good example can have a very expensive and unexpected repair.

Yes. I’m saying that I’m tired of people approaching the issue like its a yes or no thing. My article/rant was poorly worded, but I was trying to get the point across that buying a used German luxury car isn’t insta death for your wallet, as everyone on the FP says it is. Even if you buy a super clean S600 for instance, large, unexpected repairs can and will bite you in the ass. It happened to me once. $2600 for a ABC reservoir and a high pressure line, along with a intercooler pump for the turbos. The pump didn’t need immediate replacing, but it was getting sort of wonky (I wouldn’t have boost coming on at over 60 deg.) so I figured why not have them replace that well the front of the car is off.
